Tooro Kingdom has moved to reassure the Abatooro about the future of the Crown following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, announcing that the late King leaves behind a Prince as his heir.
The disclosure was contained in the official statement announcing King Oyo’s death late Thursday night, but the Kingdom has deliberately withheld the identity of the Prince and says he will be formally revealed at an appropriate time in accordance with Tooro traditions and customs.
“The continuity of the Crown is assured.”
Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki said the Prince’s identity would be formally disclosed according to the Kingdom’s established customs.
The announcement answers one of the most immediate questions arising from the sudden death of the 34-year-old monarch, whose private family life had largely remained outside public discussion.
Kingdom gives no details about the Prince
Beyond identifying him as a Prince and the heir, Tooro Kingdom has not publicly released further information about him.
The official communication does not state his name, age or other personal details, and it does not publicly explain his relationship to the late King beyond identifying him as the Prince who will continue the Crown.
iTV Uganda is therefore not publishing names circulating through social media or other unofficial channels until the Royal Family or Tooro Kingdom formally identifies the heir.
The Kingdom’s wording is significant because it makes clear that the succession question has already been addressed internally, even as the institution enters mourning following King Oyo’s death.
A transition under Tooro tradition
Rwomiire said the formal revelation of the Prince would take place at the appropriate time and would follow the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.
No date has been announced for that disclosure, and the Kingdom has not yet released details of any succession or coronation ceremonies.
The careful wording also means that public speculation about who will succeed King Oyo should be treated cautiously until the Kingdom makes its formal announcement.
King Oyo himself entered the Tooro succession at an exceptionally young age. He ascended the throne in September 1995 at three years old following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
He went on to reign for nearly 31 years before Tooro Kingdom announced his death shortly after 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
Funeral programme still awaited
Tooro Kingdom has also not yet released the detailed funeral and burial programme for the late King.
In its initial announcement, the Kingdom said another official statement would follow with further details, including the funeral and mourning arrangements.
Until that communication is issued, dates, venues or burial arrangements circulating outside official Kingdom channels should not be treated as confirmed.
The Prime Minister has asked the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during what he described as an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the Kingdom and Uganda.
Attention will now turn both to the funeral arrangements for King Oyo and to the Kingdom’s eventual formal unveiling of the Prince who has been identified as heir to the Tooro Crown.
